The difference? We will never try and monetize your information. The API is free forever, the code is open source.

Our data philosophy
Climbing data should be community-owned, accurate, and free of personal opinion. We keep descriptions, directions, and protection notes factual — and leave the editorializing to you in comments and ratings.
When we add a new area, its location generally points to the parking. This creates a sensible boundary for the area: if you park in the same place, the approach, directions, and weather are likely the same. Individual climbs carry their own coordinates where we have them.
Your ascents are yours — they capture only how you interacted with a climb (style, grade, rating, comments). Everything descriptive about a climb or area is shared, community-editable data that benefits everyone.
Pin legend
Maps across Spray use a small set of pins to distinguish climbs, areas, and points of interest:
A boulder, sport, or trad route that has been climbed and logged.
A climbing area or area — a grouping of climbs, not a parking spot.
An explored line that is doable but has not been sent yet.
Explored but not climbable — chossy, blank, or otherwise not worth the trip.
